This one is absolutely beautiful. A vintage Japanese Shōsōin-pattern neckerchief with an extraordinarily detailed symmetrical design in rich teal, moss green, navy, soft lilac and touches of ochre.
The design is arranged around four large circular medallions, each filled with wonderfully intricate figures, animals and scrolling botanical motifs. Smaller medallions sit at each corner, while a densely patterned floral border frames the entire scarf.
The intricate design takes its inspiration from the historic Shōsōin textile patterns of Nara, Japan, known for their elaborate symmetrical medallions, florals and animal motifs. The Shōsōin is an extraordinary 8th-century imperial treasure house associated with the Tōdai-ji temple, preserving historic textiles and decorative arts that reflect influences reaching Japan along the ancient Silk Road.
Made from 100% cotton, it has a lightweight finish that folds and drapes beautifully as a neckerchief. The original Japanese label remains attached and reads 正倉院 (Shōsōin), and 綿100%, confirming 100% cotton.
Originally produced as a square handkerchief, it is the perfect size to wear as a neckerchief, tied in the hair or around the handle of a favourite handbag.
In lovely vintage condition with minor signs of previous storage consistent with age.
