Such a charming vintage Japanese find, depicting the traditional culture of Sado Island in Niigata, Japan.
Set against a soft ivory ground, the design shows three women performing Sado Okesa, the island’s famous traditional folk dance, dressed in blue patterned kimono and the distinctive woven hats worn by Okesa dancers. The large red Japanese characters 佐渡 translate directly as “Sado.” Sado Okesa is one of the island’s best-known folk traditions, traditionally performed as a graceful hand dance while wearing these characteristic woven hats.
To the side is another wonderful Sado reference: a woman navigating a tarai-bune, the little wooden tub boat traditionally used around Sado’s rocky Ogi coastline for fishing and gathering seaweed. Two birds fly overhead, while bright yellow flowers complete the beautifully illustrated scene.
Originally produced as a Japanese souvenir handkerchief, it makes such a lovely little neckerchief today. The sparse illustration against the ivory background gives it an almost storybook quality, and I love that the design isn’t simply decorative — it’s a little snapshot of Sado Island and its traditions.
