Some vintage finds come with a story, and this beautiful Hermès Carré 90 is one of them.
Designed by celebrated Hermès artist Jean de Fougerolle and first introduced in 1979, Le Bien Aller captures the elegance and tradition of the French hunt. At its centre, a huntsman sounds his horn as hounds gather in anticipation, framed by intricately illustrated bridles, tack and woodland foliage. As with so many of Fougerolle’s designs, the composition is rich in movement and detail, celebrating the long-standing equestrian heritage that has been at the heart of Hermès since its beginnings as a harness maker in 1837.
What makes this particular scarf especially interesting is the original woven E. Braun & Co. Nachf. retailer label, still attached alongside the Hermès label.
E. Braun & Co. was one of Europe’s most prestigious luxury retailers, founded in Vienna in 1892 before expanding to Berlin, Munich and Baden-Baden. The company held an Imperial and Royal Warrant to the Austro-Hungarian Court and became one of Germany’s foremost luxury fashion houses. Historical records show that Braun represented Hermès in Berlin from 1950 until Hermès opened its own boutique in 1993, making Braun one of the brand’s most important retail partners during the second half of the twentieth century.
While many luxury retailers added their own labels to merchandise they sold, Braun’s relationship with Hermès went a step further. Documented examples exist of official Hermès special editions produced specifically for Braun, making the retailer an important part of Hermès’ retail history. Scarves retaining their original Braun labels offer a fascinating glimpse into this partnership and are an increasingly sought-after detail for collectors who appreciate provenance as much as the scarf itself.
This example bears all the hallmarks collectors look for: the Hermès Paris © signature, artist signature by Jean de Fougerolle, hand-rolled edges and luxurious silk twill, together with its rare original Braun retailer label.
