Vintage Japanese Wasabi-Dyed Cotton Neckerchief

Such a beautiful vintage Japanese neckerchief, with an incredibly detailed scenic print that feels like a little illustration in its own right.

Made from 100% cotton, the design depicts two women in traditional Japanese dress and woven straw hats looking out across a dramatic coastal landscape. White cranes fly through a pale blue sky above rocky islands, while vivid orange lilies bring a wonderful flash of colour to the foreground.

The palette is particularly lovely — soft aqua blue, deep forest and olive greens, crisp white and touches of orange and red — all framed by a wide dark green border.

The original Japanese sticker remains attached and reads “Wasabi-zome” (わさび染), indicating the wasabi-dye treatment, and “100% cotton” (綿100%). Vintage Japanese wasabi-dyed handkerchiefs are also documented in this lightweight cotton format. 

Originally made as a square handkerchief, it is the perfect size to wear as a neckerchief, in the hair or tied around a favourite handbag. The scenic print makes this one particularly special when worn, as different parts of the illustration appear depending on how it is folded.

In lovely vintage condition with minor signs of previous storage consistent with age.
